+++ Winners of Canadian New Media Awards Announced
Delvinia, producers of the second annual Canadian New Media Awards, have announced this year's winners. Sixty finalists from across Canada competed for the 12 hand- blown glass Pixel awards. The Grogs (a.k.a. puppeteers Jamie Shannon and Jason Hopley) emceed the event, which was held in CBC's Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto. The Awards ceremony was a lively, light-hearted event that poked fun at all the gloom-and-doom surrounding the Dotcom and high-technology industries. To read profiles of the winners and to view a Webcast of the event, visit the Canadian New Media Awards Web site.

+++ Canadian Technology Walk of Fame Announced
Canadians who contribute to global technology will soon be honoured with the creation of the Canadian Technology Walk of Fame. Said to be the first of its kind in the world, the Walk of Fame will honour 10 inventors each year as nominated by the Canadian public and selected by a panel of judges. Julian Wharton, winner of this year's Canadian New Media Awards Volunteer of the Year Award, created the Walk of Fame. "As technologists and inventors we often work in isolation," said Wharton. "The more I investigated the idea, the more enthusiastic and excited I became about Canadian contributions to global technology."

+++ Feds Plan to Get Jump on JumpTV
The federal government, no doubt caving in to the formidable lobbying powers of Canadian broadcasters, is expected to act quickly to deal with Montreal-based JumpTV's plans to retransmit television programs on the Internet without restriction. The government plans to issue a policy paper within a few weeks that will likely propose changes to the Copyright Act that will "either prohibit or restrict retransmission over the Web." The move would effectively "short circuit" JumpTV's plans to argue its case before the Copyright Board in December. (Source: The Globe and Mail)

+++ Indigo and Chapters Web Sites to Merge
The Chapters and Indigo Books Web sites are combining their operations. Indigo has entered into a "service agreement" that will see Chapters running the operations. In the meantime, the stores will continue to operate separately. "This new site will blend the best of chapters.ca and indigo.ca to create the most efficient, engaging and entertaining on-line retail site for books, music, movies, gifts, garden products and more," Peter Cooper, president of Chapters Online wrote to customers in a recent email. +++ Silicon Valley Babies to Get Email at Birth
Never mind that souvenir maternity ward nametag you saved for your baby's baby book. A hospital in California's Silicon Valley is offering newborns an email address within minutes of being born. Sequoia Hospital has teamed up with Namezero.com to offer the service that will provide "access to free email and URL forwarding, as well as online tips and resources for child care and parenting." Our only concern, dear reader, is how much spam will these youngsters have accumulated in their mailboxes before they are even old enough to access their email?

///// FACTS & FIGURES //////////

+++ Canadian Kids Love Their Online Music
A new study has shown that more than half of the world's "young adult" Internet users have downloaded music at some point. The Ipsos-Reid study found that 51 per cent of users between 18 and 34 have downloaded music files from the Internet. Among college-aged adults that figure reaches 61 per cent. Leading the pack are Canadian and Taiwanese users with a 76 per cent average. And it's not just the youngsters downloading the files. In the 35 to 54 age group, 29 per cent have downloaded files, and 16 per cent of the over 55 group have also done so.

+++ Canadians Also Love Being Online
There's little doubt that Canadians have time on their hands. A new Media Metrix survey shows that Canadians spend an average of 932 minutes -- that's 15.5 hours -- online per month. That total is up 82 per cent from May 2000. The new figures put Canadians ahead of everyone else in terms of time spent online. Users in the United States spent an average of 876 minutes online in April, the study says. Germans spent 710 minutes, Japanese 707 minutes and Brazilians 621 minutes. During the same period the number of Canadians with Web access grew by 14 per cent.
