+++ Call for 2002 Canadian New Media Awards Nominations
Organizers of the third annual Canadian New Media Awards (CNMA) have issued a call for nominations from across Canada. "Despite the downturn in the economy, there are many examples of success in the industry," says Adam Froman, President and CEO of Delvinia Inc., producer of the event. "The awards recognize these success stories, promote Canada's thriving new media industry and provide a network of role models for those interested in pursuing careers in the sector." Nominations will be accepted from January 21, 2002 until March 18, 2002 via the CNMA Web site. The awards will be presented at a gala ceremony in Toronto in May 2002. Categories include, "New Media Visionary", "Educator of the Year," and "Most Promising New Company".

+++ Digital Media "Innovations" Winners Announced
Liberty Village New Media Centre (LVNMC), in collaboration with the University of Toronto Innovations Foundation, has announced the winners in the digital media "Innovations Challenge" business plan competition. The Business Source Corp. scored first place, with Showcorp Canada picked as runner-up. Invert Media received honourable mention as Most Promising Talent. The digital media category and special prize pool were created by LVNMC to provide both learning and business opportunities for digital media entrepreneurs.

+++ Design Exchange Launches eBiz Toronto
The Design Exchange recently used a breakfast lecture to launch its not-for-profit organization, eBiz Toronto. The group, said to be the first of its kind in Canada, was created in order to promote the many advantages of electronic business. eBiz Toronto plans to enlist support in the private sector, educational institutions and governments in an effort to "'empower owners of small to medium- businesses to implement e-business strategies and technologies." "Many studies and reports show that businesses that fail to seize the opportunities of buying, selling and communicating online risk becoming less competitive," says Anya Colussi, founder and chair of eBiz Toronto. eBiz Toronto has entered into a formal alliance with the Liberty Village New Media Centre.

Talk about a win-win situation. OnTarget is a human resource initiative that connects companies with Ontario's digital media talent. The OnTarget Web site includes a free job board, an employment subsidy guide and timely information on the digital media industry. Registration is free and those who register at the site could win one of three HP Photosmart 175 Digital Cameras.

+++ "Cyberman" Featured in Documentary
Communications and Information Technology Ontario (CITO) supported researcher Steve Mann is the subject of a feature- length documentary called "Cyberman." The doc, directed by Peter Lynch for CBC's Nature of Things, explores "Dr. Mann's work in wearable computers, as well as his examination of the technology's implications through social activism and performance art." Mann is a well-regarded inventor who has been "inventing, designing and building wearable computers for more than 20 years." The documentary, which was a big hit at last year's Toronto Film Festival, is currently slated for a number of screenings at various Toronto repertory houses. (Source: CITO)

+++ Pangaea NewMedia's Work Voted Best in Canada
Pangaea NewMedia has been awarded top honours at the 2001 Baddeck International New Media Festival with wins in both the Best Canadian Entry and Best Marketing and Promotion Website categories. The top prizes were awarded for their work on www.importedartists.com, a Web site designed and developed for Imported Artists, a television commercial production company and director agency. "We were given the go-ahead to push the site to the creative and technological edge and these awards confirm that we accomplished what we set out to do," says Tony Tobias, Pangaea president and CEO.

+++ REM Served Pork and Beans
Vancouver's Pork and Beans Productions have completed animation and design for the new REM video, "I'll Take the Rain." The P&B team created animation sequences that were "edited to create a mixed video format" in an animation style tailored to match "the deep contemplative mood" of the five minute song. The flash animation was based on a design by Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara. "The video presents a unique alternative to the typically clean look that most flash cartoons have," said Jay Surridge, director of Pork and Beans.

The Canadian Woman's Internet Directory was created by Womenspace Association and has been designed to link users with Canadian women's equality resources that can be found online. There are 1,200 links listed in English and nearly 1,000 in French and include educational and information sites dealing with women's perspectives, debates, campaigns, activism, creativity, services, research and policy issues. The site also features a list of free or inexpensive software in a variety of categories, including email, privacy, accessibility and Web site creation.

+++ CAIP Calls Rogers "Unfair" A group of Internet Service Providers has complained to the CRTC about Rogers Cable's high-speed Internet service. Calling recent Rogers ads "unfair and illegal," the group, featuring members of the Canadian Association of Internet Providers, has asked the federal regulator to force Rogers to stop running the ads. The complaint claims that Rogers is using its monopoly cable service to promote its high-speed Internet service. CRTC rules prohibit cable companies from using outlets such as community channels to promote their own Internet services.

+++ NWT Community Goes Broadband With CampusNet
The Northwest Territory community of Fort Liard is about to gain broadband Internet access via Quick Link's CampusNet. The deal will see Quick Link forming a joint initiative with Chevron Canada Resources and the ADK Corporate Group, owned by First Nations Fort Liard Band Acho Dene Koe. The deal will provide wireless equipment as well as three Internet kiosks that include a PC, printer, scanner and Internet camera, all of which will be accessible to the community in the Fort Liard region.

+++ Organic Teams with Bell for GamesMania
Organic Toronto has announced that it is teaming with Bell Canada to take part in their newest convergence project. GamesMania is a subscription-based gaming service that will offer pay-as-you-play or unlimited subscriptions to popular PC games. Organic's team developed the brand and the site design, including the animated mascot, BubbleBoy. "We are very proud of how Bell GamesMania has come together," said Troy Young, vice president and managing director of Organic's Canadian operations. "It has been a labour of love for our entire team."

+++ Internet's Naked News Branches Out
One of the Internet's most popular news programs, Naked News ("the program with nothing to hide") has found a new home in the potentially lucrative world of Pay-Per-View. The newscast, which features newscasters stripping while they read the latest headlines, has introduced a PPV feature called Naked News TV. The show is available for $3.99 per show, with new episodes introduced each Friday. Toronto- based Naked News has also announced an agreement that will see the newscast air on iN DEMAND's Hot Choice and iN2 channels in the US.

+++ Online Christmas Shopping Skyrockets
Online retailers were prepared for the worst in the post September 11 market, but there were a few surprises this past Christmas. According to Ipsos-Reid, online shoppers spent an average of $324 for gifts. Online spending increased to $1.6 billion, a 78 per cent increase from 2000 total of $650 million. And according to Jupiter Media Metrix, much of the spending was done at the Canadian version of eBay, which attracted 925,000 unique visitors in December, up more than 650 per cent from December 2000. +++ Digital Heroes E-mentoring Program
AOL Canada is teaming up with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada (BBBSC) and Frontier College to provide email and Internet access for at-risk youth in Ontario. The Digital Heroes program will provide young people with access to volunteer mentors from BBBSC and Frontier via email. The mentoring will focus on personal development, educational or academic questions and career advice. "All Ontario children deserve to have someone there for them, helping them reach their full potential," Mike Harris, Premier of Ontario said upon launching the initiative.
