+++ Selection Process for Canadian New Media Awards Begins

Finalists will be announced on April 29 and winners will be celebrated on May 27 in Toronto. Visit the CNMA Web site for more information and details on purchasing tickets.

+++ CyberSecure Scores Microsoft Gold
New Brunswick's CyberSecure has been selected as the first Canadian company to join Microsoft's Gold Certified Partner for Security Solutions designation. Only 10 companies worldwide have received the honor. The Gold program is a Microsoft initiative announced recently "which seeks to ensure that all Microsoft customers have secure, private and reliable computing experiences." "This designation not only increases our strong corporate reputation as a security company, it shows the market that we are one of the best in the world," said Ryan Groom, CEO, CyberSecure.

+++ Celine's New CD Causing Stir in Europe
The Internet chat rooms are abuzz with news about Celine Dion's latest disc, but not all the chitchat is complimentary. It seems that the Epic/Sony CD entitled "A New Day Has Come," has been released in Germany and several other European countries embedded with Key2Audio copy protection, rendering the CD unplayable on any computer CD player. If users try to play the CD on either a PC or a Macintosh, the computer will likely crash. Sony says both the disc and the front cover warn consumers that the CD will not play on computers and likewise insist that reports that the "intentional corruption of the disc's session data could unpredictably affect the drive's firmware" are not true. +++ Canada Post and Cybersurf Sued
A class-action lawsuit has been filed against Canada Post and Calgary's Cybersurf. The suit, filed by a man in Burlington, alleges that the "companies failed to honour promises of free, unlimited Internet access for life" via a CD-ROM sold at post offices last year for $9.95. The Toronto Star reports that "about 140,000 people purchased the product before Cybersurf began charging $9.95 for the service." (Source: Toronto Star)

+++ Delvinia Launches CD-ROM for the City of Toronto
Delvinia Inc. recently completed a new promotional CD-ROM for the City of Toronto's Economic Development Office. Entitled, 'Click With Toronto', the CD-ROM is designed to be a tool for promoting Toronto as a viable business location, while simultaneously testing the impact of new media techniques in bolstering the city's existing marketing approach. Upon winning the proposal call process in August of last year, Delvinia partnered with the Economic Development Office in an effort that was strategic and imaginative in its approach to this new medium. The result is a dynamic new tool that highlights Toronto's innovation and diversity, and is targeted at professionals responsible for relocation decisions within North America. "The CD-ROM is a great example of strategic thinking combined with creative design and presentation, easy navigation and substantive content," said Carl Knipfel, Marketing Manager, Economic Development and Tourism for the City of Toronto. "We believe it will be a powerful tool for the user to discover more about what Toronto has to offer and for us to learn more about how our clients use electronic media."

+++ Canada Joins SMS Revolution
Better late than never, the Canadian mobile-phone industry has finally selected CMG Wireless Data Solutions to design a gateway for short message service (SMS). Previously users could only send text messages to customers using the same service. The new system, which should be in place "this year," will allow Telus, Rogers Wireless, Bell Mobility and Fido customers to send the short messages to any subscriber. The Toronto Star reports that "100 million SMS messages are sent each day in Europe and Japan, about 20 times more than Canada and the United States." (Source: Toronto Star)
