+++ Canadian New Media Awards Announce Finalists
Sixty talented individuals and companies from across Canada have
been named finalists for the third annual Canadian New Media Awards.
The Awards recognize the achievements of Canadian individuals and
companies in 12 different categories. Winners will be announced at
the awards ceremony, to be held on May 27, 2002 in Toronto.
"According to the 2001 Interactive Media Producers Survey, Canadian
new media is a $1.8 billion industry, but it's one of Canada's best
kept secrets," said Adam Froman, Executive Producer of the Canadian
New Media Awards, and President & CEO of Delvinia, producers of the
Awards. "The calibre of this year's finalists demonstrates the depth
of talent in this dynamic industry." This year, the Awards received
a 51 percent increase in nominations - indicating the growing number
of success stories within Canada's new media industry. The awards
ceremony is open to the public and tickets include admission to both
the awards show and post-show party.

+++ New Conference Offers Solutions to New Media Training
What do you get when you mix high school teachers, college
instructors, and people from the business community? OnTarget is
betting you get answers to issues educators face in training for new
media. E-Literacy OnTarget, a new conference to be held in Toronto
on May 24, represents the first time new media education and
training issues are addressed by bringing all the stakeholders
together under one roof. "Previously, training was approached within
business only in terms of how it affected business itself," Mark
Jones, Program Director of OnTarget told BitStream. "What we're
trying to say is that a strong pool of skilled new media
professionals starts by sharing the strategies that all trainers and
educators have developed. Business can learn a lot from what high
schools and colleges have developed in terms of training, and vice
versa." The one day forum includes a packed roster of speakers who
represent the cutting edge of new media training and education.

+++ Canoe.ca Labelled "Not Viable" By Owners
The popular Canadian portal Canoe.ca has "fired its remaining 67
editorial employees," according to an article in The National Post.
The cuts were necessary, according to Luc Lavoie, Quebecor's executive
vice-president of corporate affairs, because the site was "driving
down the value of the company. We realized that [Canoe.ca] was not
viable and would never be viable." Canoe.ca was launched in 1996 and
attracts "around 3.5-million unique visitors a month according to
Jupiter Media Metrix." The site's content will now be provided by the
Toronto Sun and wire services. (Source: The National Post)

+++ Yahoo Pares Canadian Subsidiary
Yahoo! has "pared its Canadian subsidiary down to "essentially a
sales and marketing operation", eliminating domestic programmers for
the Internet portal," according to an item in the Globe and Mail.
Some Yahoo.ca employees, including most in engineering and production,
were terminated on April 16. Many of those functions will now be
handled at Yahoo's home base in California. Company spokesman Scott
Morris also told The Globe that "rumours that Yahoo.ca will shut down
by the end of June are untrue." (Source: The Globe and Mail)

+++ 2002 Emma Awards Heading for Toronto
The EMMA (Electronic Multimedia Awards) will be held in Toronto this
year, the first time the prestigious awards have taken place in North
America. The EMMAs were created to "recognize excellence in digital
media content creation through the acknowledgement of best practice
and ongoing education programs." In previous years the awards have
been held in London, Dublin, Amsterdam and Hamburg. This year's
offering, in partnership with industry association IMAT, will see
industry events and a VIP dinner. Volunteers and sponsors interested
in supporting the event can contact imat@imat.ca for more info.

+++ ABCAP Studies B.C. Animation Industry
The Association of British Columbia Animation Producers (ABCAP) has
released the results of the 2001 B.C. Animation Industry Study.
ABCAP reports that in 1998, "total industry revenues in BC animation
were estimated to be $286 million" and are projected to reach $668
million by 2003. Founded in 1994, ABCAP has been the voice of B.C.
animation, making great strides to work with Government and

+++ Two e-Learning Studies Announced
FIAM (Federation Internationale des Associations de Multimedia)
Newsletter reports two studies concentrating on various aspects of
e-Learning. The New Media BC study will "gain an understanding of the
size and composition of the B.C. e-Learning supplier sector." Further
east, the Quebec multimedia association, Alliance numeriqc, is
involved in similar studies hoping to "better grasp the evolution of
the e-learning industry in the province and see how the different
public and private sector actors can integrate e-learning content and
tools in the daily lives of the users." (Source: FIAM Newsletter)

+++ Canadians Warm to Opting In
A new study from Ipsos-Reid reported by eMarketer has found that 79
per cent of Canadian Internet users have "opted-in" via Web sites to
receive email campaigns. The study also found that a rather amazing
92 per cent use email on a regular basis and 88 per cent use it on a
weekly basis. The eMarketer article also states that although
"Telecordia Technologies believes there were 24.5 million users in
2001," eMarketer predicts there will be 16 million internet users in
Canada in 2002. (Source: eMarketer)

+++ Daily Bread Food Bank Eyes Web Drive
Toronto's Daily Bread Food Bank is testing an Internet version of its
food drive. The plan, still in the early stages, allows users to
"select food items on a grocery list, then adds up the cost of the
items and allows the donor to pay by credit card." The site was
created with the volunteer assistance of Lowe RMP, a Toronto
advertising firm. The Toronto Star reports that The Daily Food Bank
is now generating about $5,000 a month via the Internet. (Source:

CANARIE Awards ECCC $2.5 Million for Product Registry
The Electronic Commerce Council of Canada (ECCC) has been awarded $2.5
million in funding by CANARIE "to accelerate the development and
expansion of ECCnet, Canada's multi-industry online product registry."
ECCnet was launched in 2000 with the aim of reducing the "amount of
errors in product listing forms and common business documents and to
synchronize data among trading partners." CANARIE reports that "six
other countries have initiated this form of country catalogue but none
have attempted one as robust as Canada's ECCnet."

+++ Canadians Most Wired in World
Canadian Internet users are more wired than even their American
counterparts. Canada boasts a 60 per cent hook up rate, compared to
52 per cent in the US. The findings were part of a report issued in
Fast Forward 3.0, the final report of the Canadian E-Business
Opportunities Roundtable. An article in Wired quotes Michael O'Neil,
country-wide manager for research firm IDC Canada and a roundtable
member, as saying that the "cost of Internet connectivity in Canada
is low compared to the United States, which explains why more
Canadians are online. (Source: Wired)

///// GREAT IDEAS //////////
+++ E.T.: You've Got Mail
Well, maybe not a great idea, but an odd one. A recent spam suggested
that "if you are a time traveler or alien disguised as human and or
have the technology to travel physically through time I need your
help!" And what help he needs. Only those with experience in time
travel need apply, as the spammer hopes to "rewind his life, including
his age, back to four." Furthermore, he adds that "if you can help me
I will pay for your teleport or trip down here, along with hotel stay,
food and all expenses. I will pay top dollar for the equipment.
Proof must be provided." Nice work if you can get it...

+++ Made-in-Canada Web Browser a Great Idea, but...
While we have to admit it is a good idea to produce a Canadian Web
browser, we must confess that the item we ran in BitStream #49 was in
fact an April Fool's joke. As long-time readers of BitStream know, it
is a tradition to publish one such item each year and perhaps this
year we were too convincing. Don't blame Canada. Blame the writer.
