+++ Study Confirms IT Gender Gap
A new study of Ontario workers with skills in information technology confirms that "women continue to be a disproportionately small segment of the IT workforce." The ITAC Media study revealed that "the proportion of men to women in Ontario's IT job market is 72:28." The current ratio for the Ontario workforce in general is 54:46 (men to women) according to Statistics Canada. "The industry has been aware for some time that one solution to the chronic shortage of skilled workers is to do a better job of attracting women into the field," said Gaylen Duncan, President and CEO of ITAC.

+++ Ottawa Promises to Fight Cybercrime
Ottawa has promised that it will soon introduce legislation that will help police to fight cybercrimes, including terrorism. Details of the plans were said to be "scant" but Justice Minister Martin Cauchon is quoted in CP as saying that "criminals are using the Internet to plan and commit crimes and, in doing so, they leave an electronic trail behind." In the meantime, the Group of Eight will likely soon move to enact "the Council of Europe Convention on Cyber Crime, the first international treaty dealing with crimes committed on the Internet." +++ Atlantic Technology Centre Set for PEI
What would Anne of Green Gables think of a high-tech cluster in her beloved Prince Edward Island? If things go according to plan, islanders might soon see a state-of-the-art IT and new media complex in Charlottetown. The area is slated for a 132,000 square foot, $20 million Atlantic Technology Centre (ATC). The province is footing the bill for the centre, which will "feature everything from office space, multimedia theatres and research labs to a small business incubator and digital audio and video production facilities." It is expected that the ATC will "hold about 20 multinational and local IT and new media companies with roughly 500 employees." (Source: The Globe and Mail)

+++ Ontario College of Pharmacists Zaps Online Pharmacy
The Ontario College of Pharmacists has taken steps to crack down on a Canadian Internet pharmacy. The college has laid charges against The Canadian Drug Store and one of its directors, William Shawn, "alleging it was operating an unaccredited pharmacy without registered pharmacists on staff." The Toronto-based operation is also alleged to have "filled prescriptions written by American doctors for U.S. residents."

FIAM (Federation Internationale des Associations de Multimedia) is initiating its first strategic planning exercise and would like to hear from all interested multimedia associations and organizations from around the world. +++ Airborne Adds Fun to AT&T Wireless
Montreal's Airborne Entertainment has been chosen to offer a variety of entertainment options for AT&T's Wireless' mMode service. Airborne's offerings will include Buzztime, the "multi-player, real- time trivia quiz show that is renowned as one of the all-time most popular wireless applications." Others will include Eternal Hero, Backstreet Betting, PhoneFoot and CrossCheck. Two custom comedy programs will also be offered exclusively for the mMode. The Quebec multimedia association Alliance Numeriqc held a day-long forum in early May entitled "Masters of our own interactive digital content." Over 150 industry and government representatives attended the six workshops, each designed to discuss how to "best establish and develop policies and mechanisms that further the production and distribution of digital content." +++ Blast Radius Wins Silver for GameCube Campaign
Canadian interactive firm Blast Radius has won a Silver Award at the One Show Interactive Gala ceremony in New York City. Blast Radius picked up a silver "pencil" in the Promotional Advertising category for its work on the Nintendo GameCube campaign. NewsPak calls One Show Interactive "one of the most prestigious international awards competitions recognizing the most outstanding and effective uses of the media." (Source: NewsPak)

+++ Vancouver's Mod7 Scores Webby Nomination Score another Webby Nomination for a Canadian firm with Mod7's nomination in the category of Best Kids site of 2002. The nomination was received by Mod7's The Pinhole Spy Camera Web site, a site that "allows youth to learn about photography and shows kids how to build a working pinhole camera." "It's a great honor for Pinhole Spy Camera to be nominated for a Webby Award," Peter Hoang, Mod7 Principal and Creative Director told NewsPak. +++ CANARIE Readies CA(x)net 4
CANARIE Inc. (Canadian Network for the Advancement of Research, Industry and Education) recently announced a partnership that will see the establishment of CANARIE's CA(x)net 4 national backbone network. The five-year agreement will provide CANARIE with a new, high speed private Internet network that will be known as CA(x)net. The CA(x)net 4 initiative will link all research-intensive institutions coast-to-coast, and is scheduled to be fully operational by July 2002. Joining the partnership will be Group Telecom and Shaw Communications.

+++ Wireless Smart Living Community Unveiled
They're calling it "Canada's first wireless smart living community," and it is located in Embrun, Ontario. The community is "built from the very start to be high-speed Internet ready" with wiring to accommodate up to four computers, a wireless antenna, and a gateway, firewall and print server already installed. Users need only contact the local Internet provider, Storm Internet Services, to activate the service and they will automatically be "connected at 2 Mb/sec both ways to the Internet."

+++ Women Outnumber Men Online in Canada and US
A new survey of Internet usage had some interesting results regarding Canadians and the Internet. The survey of some 30 countries found that Canada and the US were the only countries in which "female Internet usage is higher than male usage." The survey, published in The Wall Street Journal, found that in the in the middle of 2000, "women Net users in the US passed men in sheer numbers, although men still log more hours online." +++ Links Sought Between Arts, Science and Technology
The Canada Council for the Arts and the National Research Council Canada (NRC) have signed an agreement that will see the two agencies "promote interaction between the arts, science and technology." The agreement will see the creation of "collaborative program of research grants to bring leading artists as researchers into NRC laboratories across the country," as well as the creation of "a forum to facilitate the development of partnerships among other arts, science and technology organizations in Canada."
