+++ Leveraging Digital Content is Key to Knowledge Economy
By leveraging appropriate digital content, Canadian businesses can ensure success on the world stage, says a recent report by the E- Content Institute. The report, "E-Content's Strategic Role in Canada's Knowledge Performance", was presented to the federal government as part of Canada's Innovation Strategy.

+++ EMMA Awards to Be Held in North America for the First Time
The EMMA Foundation and Canada's Interactive Multimedia Arts and Technologies Association (IMAT) have partnered to produce the 2002 Electronic Multimedia Awards (EMMAs). The awards recognize excellence in digital media content creation, and the event takes place in Toronto in October, 2002.

+++ Is the Internet Breeding Dropouts?
Statistics Canada reports that "just over 232,000 Canadian households that had used the Internet regularly (in a typical month) reported that they no longer did so." Over half of these so-called dropouts had previously surfed at least once a week and by far the most common reason for no longer doing so was because "they had no need" for the Internet.

+++ OMDC Appoints New Chief Executive Officer
The Ontario Media Development Corporation (OMDC) has announced the appointment of Michel Frappier as the new Chief Executive Officer of the province's cultural industries agency. Michel was formerly the President and CEO of Future Source Communications.

Industry association SMART Toronto has announced the appointment of Cindy Pearson to the position of President. For the past three years, Cindy has worked with Waterloo-based Communitech Technology Association as Vice President and Director of Marketing and Communications.

+++ Young Benefit from Building Digital Collections
Canada's Digital Collections has begun a new initiative designed to give young Canadians aged 15 to 30 entrepreneurial and technology- based job experience developing multimedia Web sites displaying Canadian content. So far over 2,700 Canadians have created a total of 450 sites that display various aspects of Canadian culture.

+++ BC Museum Launches Virtual Exhibit
Randomworks Entertainment and the University of BC's Museum of Anthropology recently launched a virtual exhibit entitled "The Respect of Bill Reid Pole." The Web site documents a Haida pole- raising by utilizing video footage, audio recordings and hundreds of photographs. (Source: New Media BC NewsPak)

+++ EA Acquires Vancouver's Black Box Games
Electronic Arts of Redwood, California has announced that is has acquired Vancouver's Black Box Games. The games development studio has 100 employees and is developing the upcoming EA title "Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2." Black Box also created EA's "NASCAR Thunder 2002" and Sega's NHL 2K.

The companion Web site to the popular documentary Great Canadian Rivers has been awarded the Best Multimedia award at the 2002 Yorkton Short Film and Video Festival. The site, GreatCanadianRivers.com, uses interactive maps and diagrams, streaming video and more to "profile the diversity of Canada's waterways."

+++ Canadian Heritage Launches New Media Research Networks Fund
Canadian Heritage recently announced the launch of the New Media Research Networks Fund, which is designed to "foster and mobilize Canada's research talent in the private, academic, public and non- profit sectors." The fund will augment the capacity for research and speed the adoption of innovations in the new media and cultural sectors.

+++ CCA and NRC Create Canadian Fellowships in Art & Technology
The Canada Council for the Arts (CCA) and the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) have joined forces to create a number of fellowships for artists who wish to undertake research within one of the NRC institutes. The fellowships are intended to encourage collaboration and knowledge transfer between artists and scientists.
